Michigan State Student Interning at LFA

LFA welcomes Michigan State University junior Kortney West to its summer internship staff. West is from Niles, but living in South Bend this summer.

She said she learned about LFA through word of mouth and appreciated its wide portfolio of different types of engineering shown on the website. She said she is most looking forward to working with each department at LFA to help her refine what engineering specialty she’d like to go into.

When interviewing, she said, “It was really comfortable. I didn’t feel nervous.”

So far this summer, West has gotten to work with the Water Resources, Survey and Construction Inspection departments.

Her love for engineering developed growing up the youngest of six kids. West’s dad works in residential construction so, in high school, she told her counselor she thought she might go into construction. But the counselor noted how great at math she was an encouraged her to try engineering.

“I’ve always just loved math and I’m good at it. I’m the only one in my family like that,” she said.

In her spare time, West enjoys golf and hiking and she belongs to South Bend’s Uzima! Choir, which sings traditional African music.

Happy to have you on board, Kortney!
