This bridge deck replacement and road reconstruction project was at the US 421 over I-94 interchange south of Michigan City. US 421 over I-94 is a multi-lane arterial with a full cloverleaf interchange that included concrete pavement reconstruction, partial ramp reconstruction, with other roadside safety corrections in conjunction with the bridge deck replacement.
The bridge reconstruction included the replacement of bearings at the end bents, with semi-integral end bents, and the replacement of the steel fixed bearings at the median bent with elastomeric bearings. The existing twin structures were combined into one structure eliminating the 1 in. longitudinal joint between northbound and southbound decks. The existing profile grade was raised to provide the current 2% standard cross slope and increased the clearance below on I-94 to 16 ft-6 inches.
