The U.S. 33 (Pike Street) Pavement Reconstruction was developed as part of the US 33 bypass around the City of Goshen. This project was initiated separately and included the reconstruction of the existing pavement with full depth asphalt pavement to address existing narrow lanes and the addition of a center left turn lane.
Safety enhancements for the project included a 5-lane section with 4-12 ft travel lanes, a 12 ft Two Way Left Turn Lane (TWLTL), and 2 ft curb offsets. Constructing this roadway section in an already developed urban corridor, within the Goshen City Limits, presented multiple challenges during design. The focus was balancing the wider pavement section within the existing topography minimizing right-of-way takes and maintaining drainage. Other aspects of the project included coordination with INDOT’s U.S. 33 Bypass Project (Des. No. 9222424). The storm water and maintenance of traffic phasing for these two projects were tied together. Another key component of the Maintenance of Traffic Plan was to provide continuous access to the United States Postal Service throughout construction.
