LFA has assisted the City in several phases of its Riverwalk System including pedestrian bridges, retaining walls, walkways, water features, stream bank reconstruction and erosion protection. The Mishawaka Riverwalk Phase I project consisted of the design and construction inspection of a new landscaped walkway system that extended nearly 2,000 ft. along the St. Joseph River near downtown Mishawaka. Phases II and III of the Riverwalk Project consisted of the design and inspection of walkways connecting parks on the South Side of the St. Joseph River and a major signature cable-stayed pedestrian bridge over the river. Lawson-Fisher Associates designed all the Civil and Structural components consisting of major stream bank reconstruction, erosion protection and significant retaining walls and structures. Other members of our design team assisted with the necessary landscaping and electrical requirements. LFA also coordinated collaboration with the IDNR, IDEM and USACOE to accomplish the City’s goal as part of their downtown revitalization along with the permitting agencies’ goals of environmental protection and sustainable, long-term wildlife habitat.
The walkway connecting two adjacent parks is ADA compliant and part of a larger more user-friendly system of sidewalks, overlooks and stairs within a few feet of the River’s edge. The walkway system provides easy pedestrian access to all areas of downtown while allowing the users to be close to nature along the landscaped and wooded trail.
Buetter Park, with water cascading over a multi weir system, enhances the attraction of the Riverwalk. LFA was responsible for the hydraulic control and design of the weirs, in addition to storm drainage design and permitting associated with the development of Buetter Park.
LFAs involvement extends beyond Buetter Park and specific Riverwalk projects to numerous elements contributing to the success and popularity of the Riverwalk. LFA has provided design, permitting and/or construction services for:
- Kamm Island Bridge
- Central Park Pedestrian Bridge
- Central Park Improvements
- Central Park Stage
- Fitness Wall
- Ironworks Phases I, II and III
- East Race Improvements
