More About This Project

Category: Survey (GIS)

These two projects were part of South Bend’s initiative to convert one-way streets of Michigan and Main Street to two-way travel and make significant changes to the gateway entrances at Marion Street to the north and Chippewa Avenue to the south. These signalized intersections – also diverging points from two-way to one-way travel – were converted to multi-lane roundabouts. These two roundabouts continue to diverge traffic to two-way corridors on both Main Street and Michigan Street to balance traffic through downtown with over 20,000 vehicles daily. The projects featured ornamental lighting, enhanced raised landscaped islands, foundations for artwork, among other amenities reflecting gateway features.
