More About This Project

Category: Construction Inspection, Structural Engineering

Lawson-Fisher Associates (LFA) was contracted for this bridge rehabilitation addressing this high-traffic bridge that spans 339 feet over the St. Joseph River. Built in 1940 and situated within a historic district listed and on the Indiana Historic Bridge Inventory, the bridge required rehabilitation work to extend the design service life of the structural among other issues. included a rigid deck overlay, expansion joint replacement, reinforced concrete bridge approach replacement, sidewalk with curbs and bike ramp, bituminous paving, bridge railing and sidewalk surface seal, tree clearing, and concrete bridge railing repair.

The scope of the project encompassed a rigid deck overlay, replacement of expansion joints, reinforced concrete bridge approach replacement, construction of sidewalks with curbs and a bike ramp, bituminous paving, bridge railing and sidewalk surface sealing, tree clearing, and repair of concrete bridge railings.

The bridge exhibited signs of deterioration, including cracking at pier locations, surface abrasion on the deck, clogged drains, and cracking and spalling on the bridge railing. LFA’s expertise was crucial in addressing these challenges while ensuring minimal disruption to traffic flow on Angela Boulevard, a key crossing route through the area.

In collaboration with the City of South Bend, LFA developed a Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Scheme that included an official detour route and required coordination for traffic signal adjustments at the intersection of Angela Boulevard and North Shore Drive located immediately east of the bridge.

Key aspects of the project included the use of modified concrete for the rigid deck overlay, replacement of expansion joints, reconstruction of the west approach, and overlay of the east approach. Sidewalks beyond the bridge deck were redesigned and replaced for ADA compliance, providing improved accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

Thanks to the guidance and oversight of St. Joseph County Engineer Sky Medors, PE, the Angela Boulevard bridge was reopened under budget and ahead of schedule. The project not only extended the service life of the bridge but also enhanced pedestrian access and accommodated increased bicycle traffic, showcasing LFA’s commitment to our communities in both structural and construction engineering.
