Project Description

PLYMOUTH-GOSHEN TRAIL OVER U.S. 31 – MARSHALL COUNTY, INDIANA

Client: Indiana Department of Transportation – LaPorte District

Approximate Construction: $2,800,000

Services: Topographic Survey, Bridge Design, Road Design

Project Description:

The project at Plymouth-Goshen Trail involved converting an at-grade intersection into an overpass bridge as part of the U.S. 31 corridor improvements and was designed to accommodate additional future long range improvements to the corridor. The intersection had been the site of numerous accidents, some of them quite severe due to the high speeds of U.S. 31. To elevate the crossing to provide the necessary clearance over the highway, extensive road re-construction extended to the southwest and northeast. The new bridge allowed Plymouth-Goshen Trail to receive a straightened alignment. The project also impacted a county road intersection to the north which was reconstructed as well. Right of way was acquired as needed, drainage was maintained on U.S. 31 with utilities relocated accordingly. The red bridge beams are noticeable by any passing vehicle and appropriately represent nearby Plymouth High School’s dominant color.

The bridge has span lengths of 124.5 feet and features steel plate girders with 62-inch web plates. A concrete wall pier and Mechanically Stabilized Earth serve as the substructures for the bridge.
