West 6th Road / North Lilac Road over U.S. 31
LaPorte County, Indiana
Upgrading a major corridor, INDOT recognized the need to replace an existing at-grade crossing with a new bridge structure. To meet INDOT’s U.S, 31 corridor improvement plans, LFA designed and prepared construction documents for a new bridge structure with a grade separation. The curved, skewed, two span superstructure, utilizes chorded, prestressed concrete bulb-tee beams with spans of approximately 104-ft. and 107-ft. that utilized a center wall pier to create a grade separation along the corridor. Integral end bents were utilized to eliminate joints at the bridge ends, thereby significantly reducing future maintenance costs. To minimize bridge length and overall construction costs, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls were utilized, adding to the overall aesthetic value of the project site.
