U.S. 20 Added Travel Lanes
Elkhart County, Indiana
LFA was selected by INDOT Central Office for this turn-key added travel lanes project. The 2.5 mile 4R reconstruction project involved environmental document preparation, topographic survey, road design, small structure design, signing, right-of-way engineering, right-of-way services, permitting and utility coordination. The project began 1.25 miles east of C.R. 17 as U.S. 20 transitions from a limited access expressway to a two-lane rural minor arterial. The project ended at the U.S. 20 and S.R. 15 intersection reconstructed and widened to five lanes with curb and gutter. Aside from the needed vertical grade corrections, several intersecting roads had intersection sight distance issues that needed to be addressed. The constructed U.S. 20 roadway is a five-lane arterial with two lanes each direction, shoulders and a flush center median throughout for either protected left or two-way left turn lanes. LFA updated the engineering scope to fit available construction dollars while still providing the project’s additional travel lanes.
