Olive Road Bridge over The Indiana Toll Road
City of South Bend
St. Joseph County, Indiana
Strikingly unique and attractively designed is why the Olive Road bridge serves as the first “Gateway Structure” for eastbound travelers entering the South Bend / Mishawaka / Elkhart area region. The unique lighting and the geometric configurations define the bridge. Gentle curves of the main steel plate girders and the smooth transitions of the steel and concrete railings are meant to be reminders of some of the architecture in the South Bend and Mishawaka area. The exposed metal, including the approach and guard railing, is high strength weathering steel that requires minimum maintenance and presents very pleasing earth tone colors to blend with the elements. The pier protection devices are color coordinated and the massive and prominent concrete abutments and center pier are textured to compliment multiple features. Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls to minimize bridge length and side slope landscaping provide appropriate erosion protection. Due to the significance of this structure, LFA collaborated with the Indiana Toll Road Concession Company (ITRCC), the City of South Bend, St. Joseph County and retained a local architect to jointly collaborate on the design of this bridge replacement.
