City of Mishawaka
The Mishawaka Riverwalk design and construction inspection extends nearly 2,000 feet along the St. Joseph near downtown Mishawaka. The Riverwalk is a user-friendly, handicapped accessible walkway connecting two adjacent parks also providing overlooks and stairs within a few feet of the River’s edge. LFA designed all the civil and structural components consisting of major stream bank reconstruction, erosion protection and significant retaining walls and structures. The LFA design team’s responsibilities included landscaping and associated electrical improvements. A signature feature of this project was the construction of a two-span cable stayed pedestrian bridge spanning the St. Joseph River that’s also visible from all areas of downtown. LFA coordinated collaboration with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Department of Environmental Management and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to accomplish the City’s goal as part of their downtown revitalization along with the permitting agencies’ goals of environmental protection and sustainable, long-term wildlife habitat.
