The 13th AnnuaKamm Island Foodl Kamm Island Fest took place on Wednesday, July 20th this year with Lawson-Fisher Associates as a corporate sponsor. In spite of the high temperatures, the Kamm Island Fest was a resounding success. This unique 21 and over event, hosted by the Mishawaka Business Association on Kamm Island Park along Mishawaka’s Riverwalk, attracted several thousand people yet again!

Kamm Island Fest not only provides the entertainment and amenities you would expect for a communitKamm Island Bandsy event, but a whole lot morKamm Island Bikese. There was a classic car show, a bike show, an art show tent, and the bands Blammo and Sandbar Bums played for a great crowd! One tradition everyone appreciated was the return of the Caledonia Kilty Pipe Band.

Everybody seems to get hungry on the island, which is great because the Mishawaka Business Association partners with several local restaurants to provide food stands including Lincolnway Café, Upper Crust, Smith’s Downtown, Treehouse Shine Bar, Bonnie Doons, and more. It’s a fantastic way for visitors of Kamm Island Fest to check out what great places they can dine at the rest of the year.

LFA and the Balanced Employee

We recently posted a couple employment opportunities and mentioned that LFA has been chosen as one of the “Best Places to Work” in the state of Indiana numerous times. Have you wondered what makes LFA a great place to work? Please read on!

As we’ve mentioned before, LFA offers opportunities to work on challenging projects, professional training, and career advancement. We are a 40 person firm, wholly owned by the employees through corporate stock. This means that we’re large enough to handle significant projects, in size, complexity and quantity, yet small enough that it’s not difficult to know every other employee and something about their family. With this knowledge, leadership is able to balance work assignments between employees so that projects can be delivered on schedule, while keeping individual responsibilities appropriate.

The personal relationships we’ve developed give LFA more the feeling of a group of friends than people tied together just by business. LFA sponsors the normal array of corporate functions – Holiday parties, golf outings, summer picnics, community service events and outings to minor league baseball games – and regularly sponsors the athletic teams of employees’ children, but it is common for coworkers to participate in unsponsored activities outside of the corporate umbrella as well. There have been softball, soccer, golf and bowling teams made entirely of employees. Employees routinely challenge each other to matches of skill such as golf, fantasy football, card games, go-karting and sporting clays. We fish together, run together, play games […]

100 Years of Hydroelectricity

The Sturgis Hydroelectric Project has been in operation over one hundred years.  Constructed in 1910-1911, it has provided power to the City of Sturgis since its inception.  The power plant is located on the St. Joseph River, just north of Centreville, Michigan, with an 18 mile transmission line to the City.  The original construction included two Allis-Chalmers Vertical Shaft units (1,100 kW capacity) – still in operation today.  In the 1930’s, the St. Joseph County Fish and Game Commission constructed fish rearing ponds, to stock the St. Joseph River.  No longer in operation, the ponds have developed into a mature wooded wetland.   In 1982, a second powerhouse was added with two Allis-Chalmers horizontal tube units, providing an additional 1,500 kW rated capacity.

The plant continues to operate today, providing enough electricity to power 1,000 homes and is a source of required renewable energy credits for the City of Sturgis.  In addition to power generation, the project provides recreational opportunities – including two parks, a boat launch, two fishing piers and a hiking trails within the wooded wetland.  In 2011, the City celebrated 100 years of operation for the hydroelectric plant during the Sturgis Dam Days festival.
