American Structurepoint - Two-Way Street Conversion
City of South Bend
South Bend, Indiana
The City of South Bend developed a project converting one-way streets to two-way to create a more vibrant downtown with a stronger sense of place and identity. LFA’s role in this ambitious re-branding was to provide five different consultants with topographic survey support for all divisions of the project design. The area surveyed was large enough that a designed control network was required to maintain accuracy across the entire project. More than 70 control points along 3.5 miles of roadway corridor and 12 separate signalized intersections were set. Over 10 hours of precise GNSS/GPS observations were conducted on 41 control points. A total of 40 benchmarks were established by differential leveling using a National Geodetic Survey benchmark as the project basis. Topographic survey was collected using both GPS and a robotic total station. When required, planimetric survey was collected by extraction from aerial photography. Over 36 acres of complex urban landscape was modeled for staged survey deliverable to the design team.
